"Serenity is not freedom from the storm, but peace amid the storm."
Do you know this quote? It's one of my favs and definitely a life theme. :) Maybe for you too....

Many of us subconsciously wait for life to mellow out,
to get easier,
for everything to fall into place
- so we can finally be happy.
But all we ever have is this very moment.
And sometimes this moment is crazy as can be.

This, my friends, is the part of life where spirituality and brain science intersect.
Where we learn how to ride the waves of life, working towards mastery of our earthly existence.
As my Grandma Holmes always used to say (in her very Depression area, non new-agey way) "mind over matter." She's right.

Where we connect with the social brain and universal goodness,
and simply do the best we can with the tools and the life we have.
Always opening our hearts to receive more support, more love, and more wisdom to get us through
and to keep us growing.

But, gosh, this continual process of self-evolution isn't for the faint of heart.

Here's my fav ways to find our peace & calm within the storm:

leverage your strengths

put your best foot forward
to the max

next step is knowing
deep in your heart
your strengths

then leveraging
your unique goodness
to live your best life
transform the hard stuff

Picture

leverage {verb}:
use (something) to maximum advantage.

the human brain
is designed
to focus on the negative

the negativity bias
is an old survival mechanism
potentially wrecking havoc
on our modern lives
when we notice
every.little.single.thing.we.ever.did.wrong

when we...
second guess our abilities
focus on our challenges
beat ourselves up for
having a bad day
don't allow ourselves
to be human
make a mistake
mess up
be imperfect

Learn how to combat the negativity bias and leverage your strengths in life.

Picture

step #1: know your strength(s)
take a strength finder quiz
to determine your top strength
i've used
via institute on character

step #2: grow your strength
by noticing it in action
give your strength love
love how you feel
when you're living
your strength

step #3: understand the strength - challenge continuum
your challenges aren't weaknesses
they are actually areas
to further grow your strengths
because they are just opposite ends
of the same spectrum
the strength --> challenge continuum

step #4:
it's not a character flaw
if you're living
the challenge
not the strength
it just means
YOU'RE STRESSED

simply put
your strength
becomes
your challenge
when you're stressed

How I Use the Leverage your Strength Process

Strength Steps in Action:
According to VIA, my top strength is Kindness:
"Your top strength is Kindness which means you have a strong tendency to be nice to people. You find it easy and pleasurable to help others, and you act kindly for its own sake rather than for some other benefit."

My favorite thing in the world is helping and giving back to other people. I feel happiest in life when I'm living my strength of being kind and helping others. Yet, when I am stressed - I become one mean machine to the people closest to me. My strength - challenge continuum is kindness ---> meanness. I anticipate that I will get mean to my loved ones when I'm stressed. I do my best to take good care of myself, and have learned how to extend my strength to others, Kindness, back to myself as well, so I can live my strength of Kindness.

What about you?
What's your's strength ---> challenge continuum?

    Mama Megan

Hi friends,  I write from the heart to tell my life story, and the story of those in my neighborhood called life. Research shows that our children's emotional & mental health is contingent upon us parents being able to tell our life story, or "coherent narrative."  This is my coherent narrative, my life story in the making, with some of what I love in life too. My goal is to share my life in a way that is real, uplifting & positive- sometimes serious, sometimes fun. In my practice, I inspire parents to empowerment through reclaiming our life stories and learning respectful discipline. My work is my offering to our children- our future. Wishing you all a happy family!
